Capt Brian and Miss Gina, I can't begin to tell you how much our gang enjoyed fishing with you and we're already scheming for a return visit. Staying on fish all day for 2 days was a heck of a lot of fun, but doing it with people of your caliber was close to Utopia. Laughs came as frequently as the fish and my happy meter stayed pegged throughout the trip. Pulling the Goliath Grouper up from the depths is something that I will never forget and everyone of my sea going friends have expressed extreme jealousy. That fish visits me every night as I fall asleep calling me out for another duel and I am obligated to grant his wish.

Miss Gina's hospitality is the stuff legends are made of. We were deeply appreciative for the home cooking and the lengths both of you went through to exceed our expectations. My company's mission statement is "Consistently Create Encore Experiences that Enrich Lives One Person at a Time" but you could easily adopt as your own. My soul is screaming for an "Encore". To put in the Captains words, GROOVY! See you soon.

Thankfully, Jake  & Georgia

Thank you again for a wonderful time. Brian is the best!! It appears that we're making this a yearly trip so I'm sure we'll see you guys next time. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56aoL2cPF1I http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5f7OfkI9Rwo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4dtJNcNK60 Thanks again Gina and tell Brian thank you for us!

My son Seth (7 years) and I fished with Brian and Charles on March 30. We had a fantastic time! Brian worked really hard to find the fish, which he did without any problem! My son really enjoyed catching the pink mouth grunts as fast as he could put his line in the water (with the special, secret bait!). We made a good friend and I know we will be back fishing with Brian again real soon.

COMMENT on the CAT: This was my first time on a cat. In the morning, it was mostly 3' with an occassionally 4' seas and stacked tight together but we never get the normal pounding like you would on a monohull. I've been on a Contender which is supposed to ride well on rough seas but I think the cat rides much better. Also, its very stable when anchor making it a good bottom fishing boat. Peng, South Ga

Everybody caught fish and everybody was impressed with the boat, Captain Brian and Little B! We caught 20 keeper grouper on a very tough day, everybody brought fish home! I am on the Florida Sportsman forum as ManGofishn, I am very proud to give BigBend charters and crew the rave reviews that let others know how much of a great time we had, we drive 179 miles for each trip and we'll continue to do it year after year. Steinhatchee is beautiful, the people are friendly and the fish are willing! Thank you Brian, Gina, and Lil B...3 wonderful people running a quality charter business! I just want to put in another good word for Big Bend-- we went down for the the third trip last month (October) and caught fish all day. We ended up with a limit of grouper, up to 18 pounds (about half the fish over 12 pounds), and one king Mackerel. Also lost one other king but got to fight it a while. On the way in, we stopped to try inshore for a while...had a HUGE cobia on for a while, and caught a whole bunch of trout although just one keeper. I caught the King and the keeper trout, so I was Queen for a day, what more can you ask for? As usual Captain Brian and Little B were the bestest crew ever, all day. I'm eagerly awaiting "next time", whenever that is. I'd highly recommend anyone to book a charter with Big Bend, NOW! Janice Lancaster, Temple GA

I have to say that few minutes of pulling in a big one is up there!!!   Take care... see ya soon.   Love, Kat

July 4th we went out of Steinhatchee, FL.  The name of the charter was Big Bend Charters. www.bigbendcharters.com Capt. B, Lil B and Johnny were great to us.  They kept it exciting, educational, and if they weren't biting here, they went there.  They WILL put you on the fish.  They say the King Mackeral you see in the picture broke the local record they had.  I might even get a free trip from it next year.  It weighed 30lbs. 2 oz.  That was a blast to catch.  Everything else we caught as seen by the pictures were grouper.  We tried for some Amber Jacks and even tried to lure some Baracuda with some lures he had.  Had some bites yet they got off.  The grouper were big and that King was amazing.  ANYBODY want to go let me know we can get it on.  LOL   Later,   Brandon and Family   PS.  Big Bend,  BRIAN  make sure you get that picture of the king on the website.  Now that I'm in the Cat Daddy Mack Club.   yeeeeehaw

Hi guys! Here are the pics from Monday's fishing trip. We all had a blast! It was an awesome trip and we're ready to go back. I may have to see if I can get in on Sam's June trip. It would be really terrible if one of the guys going came down with, oh I don't know, a sudden case of food poisoning and had to back out! Ok, I wouldn't wish that on anyone, but I hope I can make it. I am officially hooked on saltwater fishing. Laura and I thought we would be seeing you guys again before we left town or we would have said goodbye to everyone at the dock. Please tell Cap't B and Little B how much we enjoyed everything. They did an awesome job! You guys are the best! Take care. Amy

Greetings Jeana and Brian We arrived back fine, with lots of rain and lightning in Perry F. I do want to thank you for the very good fishing experience. For the patience of setting up the last minute arrangments on Tuesday. I was extremely pleased with the trip as was the others.  The comeradery with Captian Brian and First Mate was excellent. Just as it we had fished many times together.  You all are a credit to the charter fishing bizz. Good luck and I will be back in touch for a re-run, perhaps in 2 or 3 weeks. Thanks again, David (4/6/05)

Captain Brian,   I haven't had the opportunity to get down to Steinhatchee and arrange a trip, but hope to in the future (particularly when we hit the zero windchills here in Illinois).  I wanted to let you know though, that since I found your site I regularly read your fishing reports.  They are so much more than "here's what we're catching" but a real commentary on the joys of life, people, places...  Not once has it failed to lift my spirits.  You should think of submitting an extended version or recap of the year to the magazines.   Sincerely,   Don Kent

This was Jessica's birthday present. This will be the third or fourth time we have been with Capt B. We keep coming back for more. Capt B is the best of them all and little B is the best mate of them all. Well, we went fishing, we had a blas and a very weird day.. We started with sheepshead, we all did pretty well at that and we were getting ready to go catch some grouper then we had motor problem. We had to go back in BUT the capt. got the problem fixe quicck and we headed to catch some grouper. We caught 20 grouper in about an hour and a half. We all thought the day was lost but the greatest Capt. and mate saved the day. Thank you very much Big Brian, Little Brian and Gina. Well we all had a blast and we look forward to the Thrill Trip in June. Thanks you guys we will miss you until next time. BIG BEND is #1! Jessica and Ray 3/18/05 PS Dinner was great :-)

You know in the fiahing magazines they always show some awsomely big fish, well we joined the CAT DADDY MAC and this trip we (Bobcat) did catch the big one. This added a little more sport to all the fun we had. What a way to get away for a day. Thanks guys and Gina for once again a special day.

Big B, Little B and Gina,          I wanted to take a minute to thank you for a wonderful day. It started off a little rough and it was colder than I thought it would be, but the day ended just great. I caught some fish, relaxed and then had a fabulous meal of grouper and shrimp with all of the fixings. Thank you Big B and Gina for having me in your home. You guys really know how to cook.            I look forward to returning in June with my wife Paula so she can experience the pleasure of meeting all of you.          Thanks again,                   Ben Allen

We had a great time. I started to get a little bummed when we hadn't found any grouper and it was getting late. Lil B worked sooo hard and never gave up---he's awesome---his hard work paid off as we hit the honey hole on our last stop--it really made our trip worth it. Don't even think about booking us on a trip without Lil B on board!!!!!! Sherry & Bob, Feb 12, 2005

Captain B: Just wanted to let you know I had a kick-@#! time yesterday.  Just got done cleaning the grouper and I'm going over to Jay's house to cook out.   I accidently left my jacket in the coffin door yesterday (its purple and orange.)  I might come by and try to pick it up Saturday, as I'll probably come over with my little Twin Vee to get some reds and trout.   I fish inshore out of Steinhatchee all the time, but this is the first time I've been offshore since I was a kid.  You made it a fun and pleasurable learning experience.  I'll definitely recommend you to anybody I know, and I'm going to try and put something together for the New Year after I recover (physically, mentally and economically) from my Puerto Rico trip.   Stay away from those Vlasic pickle jars, Andy

FISHING REPORT - Well, after several unsuccessful attempts to get out fishing this fall I was finally able to get one in this week. After a weather check, I called a buddy of mine in West Palm on Monday to see if he wanted to go on Wednesday. He said yes and we met at Gulfstream Marina in Steinhatchee on Tuesday night. Brian Smith of Big Bend Charters offers "drop-in" trips on Wednesdays and we took him up on it. Wednesday morning dawned crisp and clear on the northern gulf coast and we anxiously gathered our gear and made the short walk to Brian's 32' Twin Vee. It was a little chilly this morning, about 46 degrees, but that did not damper our enthusiasm. My friend Rob is a captain and man of the sea, but he had yet to enjoy the pull of an amberjack on the other end of his line. That would soon all change. We motored out of the river about 7am and headed to the bait spot. Brian had recently purchased some pinfish traps and we stopped to unload their contents. About 3 dozen pinfish from 2 traps were introduced into their new home in the large livewell. Baited up, we headed WSW for about 23 miles to our first stop. Seas were 2-3 feet on the ride out and a little choppy. Our first drop was called Lamb Springs, a natural spring on the gulf floor in about 52'. We nosed around, eyes tied to the bottom machine, until we saw the profile we were hunting. It took a little while for the fish to realize we had the buffet line open but they eventually got the message. Capt Brian was one of the first to "hook-up" and he passed the rod over to me. What started out as a steady but managable pull suddenly turned into an unrelenting, "house on the hook" downward lunge that I could barely contain. Apparently, after we hooked a small AJ or grouper, a jewfish (Goliath) decided to help himself to my hooked fish. It only lasted a few moments before the line suddenly broke. Pretty cool to feel something that large and powerful but there was no moving that creature on the 4/0 Penn I was using. That must have awakened the other fishies though. Rob hooked into a might AJ that gave him all he could handle. Here's the photo. This would end up being our largest of the day and almost set a new boat record for Brian. Kevin W

I just wanted to share about a rough day on the water. It was 4-6' seas, we fished hard and caught fish! Plenty of fish for what we wanted, but something you would never believe, unless you have been on this boat.... I slept on the bow of the boat on the ride in. They have this big bean bag and I crawled in after a day of fishing, it was incredible, it was like being gently rocked to sleep. If you know anything about boats, the bow is not where you want to be in rough seas, but the twin hull boat is so comfortable. I highly recommend Capt B and crew AND boat! Steve Valdosta

Thanks to Big Bend Charters and GulfStream Marina - What a great team! Just wanted to drop you guys a short note and let you know how much the Howell clan enjoyed fishing with you. Notwithstanding my little bout with an upset stomach, we had a great time. Pa's last comment to me as he headed back down to Venice was: "Let's go again next week!". As we headed back to Atlanta, my cousin Lynn called his wife and told her to go buy a new freezer (I won't report her reply). If the amberjack are like that all the time, we agreed we were going to try to talk you into buying electric reels -- remember, someday you'll be over 50 too! By the way, we thought "Little B" was a great mate; I especially appreciated how he looked after my dad. I think you've got a good thing going down there, not just because of the great fishing but also the other amenities. The Gulfstream motel facilities were great, as were the people. You couldn't ask for nicer folks who knock themselves out to be helpful. Pam was always there when we needed something. Little Mary did a great job on our rooms and a terrific job cooking our catch for us (I probably owe "Little B" a little something extra for all the bones he said he had to take out of the fish we had supposedly "fileted"). Oddly enough, I never did get the names of the owners, but they too were very friendly. And having access to the marina's deep freeze when you're down there for an extended period is a Godsend. Maybe the best thing I can say is that, after just a couple of days, we felt like we were part of the local family. Thanks again for a great fishing experience. We will be in touch soon to schedule our next trip. Meantime, since I'm only 5 hours away, please keep me in mind if you have someone trying to make up a charter. The Hump Day Special is great, but if there are opportunities on other days, I'd like to know. Steve Howell (The "Wahoo")

This trip was awsome I hooked my first Permit, it was huge it was a fight to remember and I will never forget. It was also very tasty. The grouper was so hot we lost count how many were in the cooler, so we had to empty the box and recount the fish. This is why I cant wait untill september My next charter. If you would like me to I will send you some copies of some of the pictures that we take? I received the large picture that your wife took. We call it  "5 men and a fish head" due to the fact that Gene had his fish almost covering his face! Once again thanks for everything and I am sure I will be fishing with you again. Eddy

Capt.Brian Have been an offshore fishing nut for years down to owning my own boat. I have fished tournaments all over the state with friends and family and have enjoyed myself every time. However let me say this was the best charter I have ever been on. You are a good captain and have a great first mate.Your main concern is catching fish and making sure your charter party enjoys the whole experince. Our group is planning a return in the future and will look foward to seeing you and your first mate again. Dennis Wilburn David Bass Charter

We had a blast fishing. I was a bit surprised that the kids didn't fade, but they maintained their energy the whole way home. We went ahead and cooked out when we got home (8:00) and also cooked fish last night. Thanks Brian for being so accommodating, and we may look to book again this summer or fall. Loved the apartment, very spacious and clean. Great Value. The boat is spectacular, I can't believe the ride and so much room to fish, I like the open design! The first mate and captain are FIRST RATE! Steinhatchee has the greatest fishing, never a boring moment, a great variety of fish too. We will be eating fish for a year! Capt B, you guys are the best - you have the complete package! See you again in the Fall. Jack, Conyers

Captain B made three generations of the Carter Family happy with a nice catch of Grouper. My seven year old granddaughter (Fourth Generation) was also happy with one of the smoked grouper fillets! "Best fish I ever ate in my life." Thanks, Capt. B, for a fun day of fishing. Wendell Carter

Brian, Just dropping a line to say thanks for the attention given to my ten year old daughter Gracie during our recent offshore trip. You and Little Brian have a friend for life in that little girl! I would highly recommend using Big Ben Charters for a family outing on the big water. The captain and mate are first class and the fishing is outstanding. Thanks again and we look forward to seeing you soon. Clint Carlton Carlton Outdoors

Hello Brian and Gina: Just wanted to drop you guys a short note and let you know how much the Howell clan enjoyed fishing with you.

We had a great time and will be back in a couple of months. Thanks for your expertice, your companionship, your hospitality, and the great time. Please pass my thanks to Mrs. Capt B. and your boy Brian Jr. (Oh I know that's gonna make me some points with all parties)Also to Pam, LittleJohn, and all the fine folks at the Marina. Tim

THIS IS A REFERENCE LETTER TO THOSE WISHING TO TRY BIG BEND CHARTERS: I would like to endorse Big Bend Charters and Capt. Brian as being one of the few exceptions to the Offshore Charter for Hire Market. As an avid angler without a "seaworthy" vessel, I have had my fair share of "Charter" experience. I found Big Bend Charters to be focused on the angler as a person and not as a commodity. The offshore experience I have had with Big Bend has been on the kind of fish that will give you the thrill of a life time. This seems to be the goal of Capt Brian. The offshore area outside of Deadman's Bay (the Steinhatchee inlet) is chock full of Cobia, Grouper (Reds & Gags) and Amber Jack averaging about 15-20 lbs. Sitting around the "Gulfstream Marina" dock, waiting for the fish to be cleaned, I've talked to Florida Anglers who come to Deadman's Bay from down south with their own boats. Why, I asked? The fish harvest is richer here than in most other west coast venues. I am here to tell you, it seems that the Captain's day is made every time he sees the chin on an Angler drop to the deck as he struggles to utter the words "fish on". This happens regularly, to three or four anglers, simultaneously, throughout the day! The Capt runs a Catamaran Hull vessel with deck space galore, safety equipment visible and within easy reach, and a set of two, four stroke, "Deuce and a Quarter" Honda's on the back. This allows him to economically leap frog out to 60/70 miles offshore quickly and economically. The pay off is with the Anglers, you get such a variety of fishing! You bottom fish till your arms feel like they are going to fall off, then he likes to troll for Grouper! That's right! (to see is to believe)! Six rods out and just wait until the action starts! "Fish on" and the scramble as three or four rods are doubled over! The result is often mixed as, lo and behold, not only has a Grouper been hooked but, a King, or Cobia, or even a "Bo-Bo"! "Round Robin," multi species, fishing! The downside is natural...water temp, current speed, barometric pressure, water quality, weather fronts...but out in the "Gulf" this stuff is in a constant "good day" presentation! The way I see it Big Bend is building a charter business. The way they have chosen to offer themselves to an already very competitive market is to present the Angler with an "experience." As an "experience" Big Bend offers personableness and memory making as standard fare. That is the pitch. The bottom line is a premium "Angling Experience" worthy of preserving as a memory; to serve you as an tool to increase in your skill or in providing you with an arsenal of distraction to take the "blues" away on a rainy day! Big Bend Charters has succeeded in delivering this every time I have patronized them. The business practices of Big Bend Charters are conducted in a manner that satisfies both parties...they want to stay in business so you will want to patronize them again. I have found them to return honesty, sincerity, and consideration when it is given. I have not found them to be crass or inconsiderate. I know this sounds a little commercial, but...truly this has been my experience in almost one year of booking with them (1/2 a dozen times?). I would highly recommend them to anyone who feels they have the stamina to fish, big fish. Sincerely Yours, Brian / Macon GA

We went fishing with Capt.Brian on Oct.24th. We caught 303lbs of fish. The day was perfect!! The weather was beautiful and so were the fish! If you have never went with Brian fishing you are truly missing a great adventure. He has the most top notch fishing charter I have ever been on. We have went with him three times now and every time it just gets better and better! He always finds the fish and makes sure you not only catch them but that you catch BIG ones!! His first mate is also named Brian. He is such a work horse and always waiting on you hand and foot. He impressed us so much that we had to mention him. He is truly an asset to the boat! They are just top notch people who really love there jobs! It is a pleasure to go with Big Bend Charters and we can't wait to go again!!

You and Brian already know this, no doubt----but you are a part of so many people's great memories in life! It may seem like a lot of "work" for both of you---AND IT IS----but you are well remembered by so many in such a positive way dba....part of peoples' positive life's memories. How many people in their everyday jobs can say that or know that people think of them in those terms? Not many at all. People think of "places to go" for pleasure. Panama City, Key West, Maui (!!!), etc..... But how many people think of other people in those places who brighten their lives while there? Not many. With you two, people not only think of the place, but of you two who make the place / trip a great memory. And again.... how many people can say that they have that effect, long term, on other people's memories/life's memories?---IN THIER JOBS???? Again: NOT MANY AT ALL. PERIOD. I'll get off of my soapbox, but both of you need to hear this more than you already do, no doubt! PS--My Son will have more vacation time with his new job next year and I will bring him down to start his Steinhatchee memories / the next generation. Once "hooked," he will never be the same. In fact, I suspect we will then "hook" His Beautiful Wife and my Beautiful Wife (His other) afterwards!!!!!!!! His Sister (our Beautiful daughter) is then next!!!!!!!! Joe From Conyers

We had 6 on our trip and we all had more than elbow space to work those grouper. We had 5 amberjacks at the same time and that was awsome!!If you got a group of guys that want to go fishing I highly suggest Bigbend charters. Brian and his mate Garret are awsome they will fish as hard as you want and belive me we were 6 tired puupies after that trip. Thanks once again Tommy Idoyaga

Hi everyone this is a great trip to go on and the captain is one of the best. Not scared to tackle any fish in the sea as he tried three times to hook me up to a jew fish between 200-300 pounds but instead I caught and fought a fish from the deep for about 30 minutes and got it to the boat to find a 6 1/2 foot 150 to 200 pound shark on the other end. The hardest tug war match I have ever been in. Something I will never forget thanks do Captain Brian. By the way for everyone that does not no....Its not the size of the man with the fishing rod.....but the size of the heart and soul of the fisherman.........From the little guy on the boat see ya next time on the water... For folks that have fished with Capt. B, this is redundant. However for folks like myself who may be looking for a guide and boat, and don't have much to go on except for what comes up on a search engine, this may be useful information. I have had the opportunity to fish with many people throughout the years, both professionals and friends (or friends of friends). And there are guides, and then there are "guides". Most of my fishing experience in the Steinhatchee/Horseshoe/Keaton Beach area has been with guides that have fished the area for 20 or 30, or more years. These individuals talked of a time when 5 pound trout were common and you didn't have to run 30 miles offshore to catch a few grouper. In recent years, the little village of Steinhatchee has blossomed, bringing hundreds of boaters on any given weekend looking to fill a cooler with fish or scallops. Although some of the guide "icons" have retired, there are still numerous professionals to choose from that will put you on the fish and provide an enjoyable day on the water. However, as when decorating a Christmas tree, you have some really nice ornaments, then you have the special one you put on the top. Capt. Brian Smith is the one that goes on the top. He does all the things you expect a good guide to do... find fish, offer up the correct baits, has a sturdy, safe boat; and provides a pleasant atmosphere during the day trip... as do many others. So what's the big deal, you may be asking? Here's the difference, at least for me. We leave the dock early and when we come back in, most other charters have been in for hours. So many times, I've been out in the Gulf or the Atlantic and at 3:00 the fish finally turn on. At 3:10, the captain says, "Time to reel 'em in boys and head for the barn." Brian doesn't watch the clock, he watches his customers. He mixes up the fishing... some bottom, some trolling, some drifting. We don't have to completely change out rigs for different styles of fishing. Rods are rigged and ready. He doesn't park on a spot and sit back while everyone else fishes. He helps in the effort, whether with some instruction or sometimes with a hand on the rod. As for youngsters, I've seen 4 foot wide smiles on my kids' faces while they're hooked to everything from bonita to pinks to grouper, and turned around to see a 6 foot wide smile on Brian's face watching the kids reel them in. He has played 20 questions with 10 year olds with the tolerance of a saint. And he's taught me quite a lot in the few times I've fished with him. Enough said. I have had the good fortune to fish with some great guides in the Big Bend area, and most will give you a great day at a fair price. And no one can absolutely guarantee a cooler full of fish on every outing. But you would be hard pressed to find a more hospitable and capable individual than Capt. B. Five stars. C. McRae, Atlanta, GA.
