Report

Just a Fishing Report I find myself pushed for time this Sunday evening so I’m just going to give a straight up fishing report this week. I hope you find it informative. Judging by the number of dead trout I’ve seen at the fish cleaning table, now is a bad time to be a trout. Guides, as well as, weekenders are bringing in some good fish. But the overwhelming theme is… “you’ve got to work for them”. High winds have disturbed the water and turned it a coffee with cream color. The bite has been described to me as off with periods of flurry. If you’re patient, work for it, you’ll come in with a good mess of trout. Try fishing the three to four foot depth, pitching a variety pack of jig colors and keep on keeping on as the day progresses. Folk have fished both south and west of Steinhatchee for the catches they brought in. Big trout have slacked off this week, compared to last week, but slot trout are good given enough time on the water. Capt. Steve Kroll (Pepperfish Keys Charters) gave me some of the details. Captains Mark Lord, Scott Peters, Pat Brooks, and Steve Etts have confirmed the bite. Take home message: be patient and keep fishing. Winds have blown water off the shore and red fishing has been difficult to say the least. Most guides have ‘blown’ off red fishing due to lack of water. No need destroying your boat to go for the reds when the conditions are wrong! Offshore, grouper fishing ain’t bad when the winds permit going. Bottom fishermen are taking grouper on every bait, live or dead, on hard bottom areas from 42 to 65 feet. Trolling is also an option. I like flopping back the trolling plugs when going from spot A to spot B to shoot at grouper, as well as, the kingfish that are popping up here at there. One good king fish can make for some mighty fine fresh steaks on the grill. Red snapper season is open again. You can keep them if you’re catching them; that is a good thing. Thanks for reading. Take care of yourself and the tackle. Capt B Fish and guest in three days are stale. JOHN LYLY (1579)
